Forms of Noninflammatory Acne Treatment
Noninflammatory acne is usually an obstructive disease characterized
by open and closed comedones. Therefore, the treatment consists
of the removal of thses comedones and the prevention or reduction
of the formation of new lesions. Open comedones, or blackheads,
can be effectively expressed by direct pressure with a comedo extractor,
a small metal scoop with a hole in the center. The hole is placed
directly over the blackhead and pressure applied against the skin
with a slight sliding movement across the skin. Closed comedones
or whiteheads, cannot be removed easily with the extractor alone.
The skin over the whitehead must be gently and superficially nicked
with a small, sterile blade before extrusion with the comedo extractor.
There are a number of ways to prevent noninflammatory acne from
developing which doubles as an effective treatment for loosening
existing comedones. These options include:
| 1) |
cleansing agents such as soaps and detergents |
| 2) |
astringents containing substances such as acohol or acetone |
| 3) |
creams, lotions, gels, etc. |
| 4) |
cryoslush therapy that freezes ths skin to induce peeling |
| 5) |
ultraviolet light treatment |
| 6) |
topical applications of vitamin A acid |
Please note that these are only a full sampling of the options
available. Each treatment may not necessarily be recommended by
your physician or dermatologist. Most often their recommendation
is a form of peeling agent or that in combination with one of the
other options. Some dermatologists even suggest frequent shampooing.
