Parental Advice
Acne is not a life threatening condition, however, it would be
a mistake to underestimate the impact that it can have on your
adolescent child. Often acne becomes such an intense concern for
adolescents that they begin to limit social interaction. This can
be avoided by reassuring your child via the following steps:
- First you should find a sympathetic and understanding dermatologist
for your child to seek medical treatment with. There are many over-the-counter
treatments for acne, however, they need education regarding the
many factors associated
with the disorder as well and an experienced and supportive professional
to provide valuable reassurance. You will leave this appointment
with a framework for daily treatment.
- Now it is important to make certain that your child will
maintain the treatment regimen. You must
strike an appropriate balance of insistence and understanding while
not nagging your child. It is EXTREMELY important that you do not
nag your child, this can cause worse cases of emotional instability
while the child begins to believe that he/she is not doing enough
to treat the acne. This can lead to over-treatment which will inflame
the tissues even more.
- Following through on the instructions should fall in the responsibility
of the adolescent. They need to be cautioned that
scrubbing too vigorously may lead to skin damage and scarring.
The importance of using only those prescribed preparations and
appliances
and
carrying out associated directions are emphasized.
- Assist them in exploring
job or other after-school interests. Acne should
not
become an
excuse
to avoid
social contacts
and activities
after school.
